GOOD MORNING: The report that Oscar
winners live 3.9 years longer than non-winners brought some
interesting reaction from those I could reach. F'rinstance,
Gregory Peck ("To Kill a Mockingbird," 1962) told me,
"I recently celebrated my 85th birthday so I'm living proof
of it! There may be something to it -- but I don't know what.
Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for that brilliant, powerful cameo
-- which isn't on the horizon yet" ... Eva Marie Saint
("On the Waterfront," 1954) was so excited on hearing
the news, she said, "I'm going to go Rollerblading this
afternoon." And she asked, "If you have an Emmy, does
that give you an extra six months?" ... Sidney Poitier
("Lilies of the Field," 1963) said, "I am
delighted to know I have 3.9 more years in which to improve my
golf game. But the 3.9 years would still leave me way short of
average." And, of that report (published in the Annals of
Internal Medicine), Whoopi Goldberg ("Ghost," 1990)
said, "I'm so glad to know that, but I won't truly be able
to comment until I die!" ... Martin Landau ("Ed
Wood," 1994) said, "Winning an Academy Award was
designed to let us live 10 years longer, but that was shortened
because of the stress of the Oscar campaign." Now
co-starring as Jim Carrey's father in "Majestic," he
next plays the head of a studio in "What Comes Around"
... Other Oscar winners were not available by deadline, they
were too busy trying to win another Oscar to add more longevity
... Add to the sked of Eva Marie Saint and husband Jeffrey
Hayden a June 9 reading of Willa Cather's "On the
Divide" for Peck's Reading Series for the Library
Foundation of L.A. Shay Duffin, who performed last Saturday in
Peck's program as Brendan Behan in "Confessions of an Irish
Rebel" (to a sellout), will perform again Saturday and
Sunday as a benefit for the new Celtic Arts Center in Studio
City.
THINK YOU'RE BUSY? Jennifer Lopez, starring by day in
"Enough," learns the pic's upcoming fight routines by
night while also rehearsing to tape videos for domestic and
international releases of singles from her multi-platinum Sony
release, "J.Lo" ... This weekend, Connie Stevens and
daughter Tricia Leigh Fisher baby shower daughter-sister Joely
Fisher (Mrs. Christopher Duddy), who expects a baby in 3½
weeks. Another arrival for Connie -- a new fragrance, Sweet
Peace, for her Forever Spring line now expanding into the U.K.
... And the melodies linger on: the classic songs of Jimmy
McHugh are among us again via jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard's
new Sony Classical's "Let's Get Lost" -- including
"I'm in the Mood for Love," "On the Sunny Side of
the Street," and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love,
Baby" ... And I spotted a dapper Van Alexander at Carroll's
in BevHills where the 86 years young Alexander was buying golf
sweaters. He told me his "A-Tisket A-Tasket," written
with Ella Fitzgerald in 1938 (!) and recorded by Ella and Chick
Webb on Decca, has yet another rendition, this one by Grammy
winner DeeDee Bridgewater ... And those of you who hear the
sweet ... voice of ... Mary Sonya Sargent, will
have a treat hearing her sing as "Mary Sargent, The New
Folk-Rock Singing Sensation," June 1 at the Dialog Cafe on
the Sunset Strip. You can also hear her on the www.bandtunes.com
Web site
... And the multi-talented Susan Anton, who has a new
CD, "One Night" (Varese Saraband), recorded at the
Cinegrill of the Hollywood Roosevelt, joins the "Vagina
Monologues" in San Fran's Alcazar starting June 5 for a
three-weeker.
THERE'S NO BIZ LIKE DOE BIZ: "Glen Mary Glen
Rose," an evening to benefit the Step Up Women's Network
benefiting the Revlon/UCLA Breast Cancer Center, will convert
male film roles into those as if written for women. F'rinstance,
"Tootsie" will star Jennifer Crystal Foley and Vicki
Lawrence, "Rain Man" as acted by Amy Brenneman and
Jillian Armenante, "Princess Bride" by Susan Egan and
Amy Pietz, "Get Shorty" by Joanna Kerns and Katey
Sagal, "It's a Wonderful Life" by Sheryl Lee Ralph and
Elizabeth Berkley, "True West" with Melissa Gilbert
and Alison Arngrim -- and more -- at Royce Hall on June 13 ...
And the Atlantic Theater Co.'s annual benefit dinner and auction
and show, "Who Says It Can't Be a Musical," May 21 is
at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. It is "an evening of
unlikely adaptations and questionable choices." But the
parodied legiter's benefit auction prizes, however, are for
walk-ons on TV's "West Wing" and "Becker"
... George Schlatter produces the "Evening With Larry King
and Friends" benefit at the BevWilshire on June 4. Honorees
include Sumner Redstone. Larry King m.c's. And the Larry King
Cardiac Foundation is beneficiary. Entertaining are: Natalie
Cole, Kenny Loggins and comedian Lewis Black ... Orson Bean, a
survivor of the blacklist, is the Lifetime Achievement honoree
Friday at the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters' lunch at the
Sportsmen's Lodge ... A.C. Lyles celebrates his 83rd birthday
Thursday. It marks his 73rd anni working for Par -- he started
at age 10 as a page in the Par theater in Jacksonville, Fla. ...
Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue celebrate their 21st wedding anni
May 21 ... Frank Cooper celebrates his 89th birthday May 21,
also toasting his 71st year in the biz and May 30, he and wife
Sylvia celebrate their 64th wedding anni. This, too, is showbiz
... "The Producers" is the hottest ticket (ever?) on
B'way, but Marion Ross is the hottest ticket in Kansas City,
Mo., with longtime companion Paul Michael in "Over the
River and Through the Woods" at the New Theatre where their
run is totally sold out through June 24. And K.C. mayor Kay
Barnes gave 'em the key to the city.
